Livestock grazing
and access to water is a real problem for both the landowner and the ecosystem.
There are a few ways for landowners to water livestock without allowing them
access to streams, but often isn't considered because of the initial setup
involved.
If livestock are
allowed to always access the stream with no management, severe bank erosion
and compaction can take place. This can lead to very sediment-laden waters
and loss of soil as well as livestock fecal matter inputs.
Many of these
streams and rivers go to recharge aquifers that we use for drinking water.
The issue team is trying to quantify the impact livestock have on streambanks
compared to streambanks with no livestock erosion. The Agroecology Issue
Team is working hard on a resolution that is good for both farmer and
ecosystem. |
