This is a picture
of the Tjernagel farm before planting a Riparian management system.
You can see that the
stream banks were eroding badly and there was no vegetation along the
stream.
Because
there was no way for the land to soak up heavy rains, a storm in 1996
produced a very erosive flood that left part of the land on the Tjernagel
farm as you see in the next picture.
This
flood left a large hole downstream of the road culvert. It washed hundereds
of cubic feet of soil away, and deposited lots of gravel and sand as you
see to the left of the stream.
Since
the flood, there has been a riparian mangement system put in. You can
see streambank stabilization structures along the left hand bank, and
cows grazing in managed cells, or paddocks.
